Honor Exceptional Members
with an OSA Award Nomination
OSA Awards and Honors recognize
individuals who have made significant
contributions to the field of optics. ;e
deadline for most 2012 award nominations is 1 October 2011. Please visit the
“Awards & Grants” section of osa.org
to read descriptions of the wide array of
OSA recognitions and to nominate an

OIDA Workshop a Success
;e Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), a division of the Optical Society, hosted the
Short-Distance High-Density Optical
Interconnects Workshop on 12-13 April
2011 at the Stanford Photonics Research
Center. A “Roadmap Report” that highlights the content presented during the
meeting, along with near and long-term
projections, will be published in June
2011. ;e report is freely available to
OIDA members and may be purchased
online by nonmembers. To learn more
about OIDA, please visit www.oida.org.
New Resource for Youth
Education— ExploreSound.org
;e Acoustical Society of America and
the Optical Society collaborated to
develop and launch a new youth education website— www.exploresound.org.
;e site features lesson plans, definitions,
career profiles and simulations, and it is a
valuable (and fun) resource for students,
educators and parents.
Brazil Hosts Light-Matter
Workshop
;e 2nd International Workshop on
Fundamentals of Light-Matter Interac-
tion took place in
Porto de Galinhas-
PE, Brazil from
13-16 February 2011.
Its goal was to bring together world-leading scientists and young researchers
so that they could interact as intensively
as possible, giving the young scientists
the chance to discuss their ideas and
learn about the most recent trends in
the field.
As a part of the Brazilian-German
Year of Science, Technology and Innovation, the workshop was supported by
many institutions, including OSA. From
the 92 participants, 27 were non-Brazil-ians and 46 were students. ;e workshop
was a great success, both scientifically
and logistically. For more detailed information, pictures and presentations, visit
http://blogs.df.ufpe.br/~lightmatter2.
A full workshop report is available at
www.opticslatinamerica.org. ;e next
light-matter workshop will occur in
Berlin, Germany, in July 2013.
OSA Supports ICO- 22
in Mexico
OSA is contributing conference support
and student paper awards to the 22nd
congress will be held 15-19 August 2011
in Puebla, Mexico. Held every three
years, ICO- 22 will report on the latest
advances and innovations in optics and
related areas. During the event, top-level
specialists will deliver keynote speeches,
and attendees will have the chance to
visit with exhibitors of prestigious commercial companies. OSA President Chris
Dainty and OSA Vice President Donna
Strickland plan to attend and present
invited talks. Read more about ICO-22:

OSA Hosts Digital Holography
Meeting in Tokyo
At a time when many were canceling
travel plans to Japan, OSA remained
committed to hosting
a successful topical
meeting on digital
holography (DH)
and 3-D imaging at the University of
Tokyo. Cochairs George Barbastathis
of M.I. T., U.S.A., and Toyohiko Yatagai of the Center for Optical Science
and Education at Utsunomiya University, Japan, and OSA CEO Elizabeth
Rogan all made opening remarks.
“;e March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear accident shattered the livelihoods and wealth of many
Japanese people and also put the conference in jeopardy,” said Barbastathis.
;e DH chairs, committee and OSA
sta; monitored the situation carefully,
waiting until data from the Japanese
government and international agencies
indicated that the Tokyo-Komaba area
was safe. ;ey were honored to have
had this opportunity to support their
Japanese friends and colleagues.
;e meeting—which took place
May 9-11, 2011—was a success. ;e
quality and diversity of the presentations was outstanding. ;e topics it
addressed included optical data storage,
computer-generated holograms, 3-D
imaging, 3-D display, holographic imaging and microscopy. “;e atmosphere
was one of true delight in sharing
the latest results and in learning
new approaches,” said OSA Fellow
Joseph Haus.
