OSA Fellow Becomes
AAAS Fellow
OSA congratulates Barry R. Masters
for his election to the status of Fellow
with the American Association for the
Advancement of Science
(AAAS). Masters is also
a Fellow of OSA and
SPIE. He is recognized
for his work in the area
of corneal and epithe-
lial metabolism and
differentiation by the
application of confocal
and two-photon in vivo imaging micros-
copy. Masters is a visiting scientist in the
department of biological engineering at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He was formerly a professor in anatomy at
the Uniformed Services University of the
Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., U.S.A.

Garrett Wins AOS Student Award
Michael Garrett, physics student at the
University of Queensland in Brisbane,
Australia, was awarded the Australian
Optical Society Student Travel prize at
the Australasian Conference on Lasers
and Spectroscopy/Australian Conference on Fiber Technology in Adelaide,
Australia. His winning presentation was
titled “Formation Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Dimple Trap.”
The prize includes travel support for an
OSA meeting of the winner’s choice.
Congrats Rank Prize Winners
The Rank Prize for Optoelectronics will
be awarded to J.J. Wynne, R. Srinivasan
and three co-workers for applying excimer laser surgery to refractive correction
of the cornea—the procedure popularly
known as LASIK. The team discovered
that the excimer laser operating at wavelengths below 200 nm could be used to
etch organic matter in a precise manner,
with no evidence of thermal damage
to the surrounding area. Wynne is an
OSA Fellow.
The Rank Prize funds were estab-
lished in 1972 by the late Lord Rank to
encourage a greater understanding of the
sciences of nutrition and optoelectronics,
two areas that Rank believed would be of
special interest to mankind. The awards
will be presented by Ian Taylor at The
Royal College of Physicians, London, on
Monday, February 8, 2010.
OpEx “SPARCs” Some Praise
Joseph H. Eberly of the University
of Rochester, Michael D. Duncan of
the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory,
Martijn de Sterke of the University
of Sydney, and John Childs, OSA Sr.
Director of Publications, have been
recognized by The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) as “early visionaries” for
their contributions to the creation and
development of Optics Express and open-access publishing at OSA.
SPARC named OSA the first SPARC
Innovator of 2010 “for being a shining
example of community-driven creativity
and innovation in scholarly communications” and praised “the team at OSA that
brought Optics Express into existence and
nurtured its growth and sustainability.”
The journal, now entering its second
decade of publication, is consistently
ranked among the top titles in its field.
Attend Congressional Visits Day
Once again, OSA is offering members
the opportunity to participate in the
Congressional Visits Day sponsored by
the Science, Engineering and Technology Working Group. This two-day annual event brings scientists and engineers
to Washington, D.C., where they meet
directly with elected officials to raise visibility and support for science funding.
The event will take place April 28 and
29. OSA will schedule all appointments
and provide training and talking points
for participants. For more information,
e-mail public-policy@osa.org.
Lynne Sturtz ( lsturt@osa.org) is OSA’s publications coordinator.
