NIST Scientist to Receive
First Walther Award
Established in 2007, the Herbert Walther
Award is jointly given by OSA and the
Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. It
recognizes contributions in quantum
optics and atomic physics as well as
leadership in the international scientific
community.
e first award will be presented to
David J. Wineland of the National
Institute of Standards and Technology
Time and Frequency Division, Boulder,
Colo., U.S.A., for his contributions
to quantum information physics and
metrology, and for the development of
trapped ion techniques for applications
to basic quantum phenomena, plasma
physics and optical clocks. e award
will be presented during LASER World
of Photonics and CLEO/Europe—
EQEC 2009 in Munich, Germany,
on June 16.
Member Made AAAS Fellow
OSA congratulates Prem Kumar, a
member of OSA’s Publications Long-Term Planning Group, for being named
a Fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science. Kumar
is the AT&T Professor of Information
Technology in the department of electrical engineering and computer science at
Northwestern University in Evanston,
Ill., U.S.A. He is being recognized for his
contributions to quantum communications, particularly for utilizing quantum
optical e ects in fibers to realize applications of entangled photons.
